Reflection Essay

In this essay, I will be reflecting on my group project. We wanted to create a band that catered for a gap in the market, we believed that we had an idea for a sound that was

innovative, we wanted to do more than just fit into a box that was already out

there. We decided to create a sub-genre that was a mixture of Neo- soul and

R&b the two genres coming together would define our sound and make us sound

unique. We formed a band with each other’s strengths and weaknesses taken into

account. Knowing that together we could potentially create a strong collective

that compliments each other.

During the forming process, we started to talk about our music styles and what each of us could bring to the project. Rhyanne, Aiesha, and I were all singer-songwriters with Rhyanne also playing piano and Andreas playing the guitar. Together a pattern was starting to form in our music which was R&B however, we wanted to jazz it up by adding Neo-soul as well. This was a style all four members resonated with which fit perfectly, that also helped us collectively come up with a group name “Hazy Harmony”.

For our second session, once we start developing our storming stage. I was online for this meet-up, however, I had a clear vision for our group. ‘Each member of the team focuses on the leader’ (B.Tuckman1965). On our third meet-up – Andras created a drumbeat and came up with some chords on the guitar and Rhyanne created chord progressions on the keyboard this was how our song “I’m feeling you” was created. In the weeks to come as we enter our norming phase we developed our song further and eventually came up with verses, a chorus, and a bridge. I would often come up with ideas and lyrics and Aiesha and Rhyanne would develop and co-write to develop and add their stamp. Rhyanne would come up with a melody and Aiesha would sing and add to the lyrics.

For our second song Rhyanne, Aisha and I started thinking of an idea that would link with our first song. “I’m waiting” started to take shape when I started humming and talking about a feeling and vibe I wanted to get a cross and began creating a melody. Rhyanne played the notes I sang on the keyboard, I then suggested that she open a logic file to start putting the song together. When Andras was able to attend he added guitar to our song and put his spin on it.

The performance could have been better rehearsed and prepared however, I am still pleased with the overall outcome. I feel we put our brand across the way we wanted to and the visuals worked well with our collective vibe and atmosphere but there is most defiantly a lot of room for improvement. Although I feel our group dynamic and communication was very strong there were certain hurdles due to members availability and other commitments. The time and day of our group rehearsals were often a challenge for me to physically go to however, I kept communication open when I was not available in person and made sure I attended virtually instead. When I reflect on our journey as a group, I feel the experience has impacted me because I enjoyed creating our music. Considering the obstacles I feel we all persevered and worked well together. I look forward to collaborations and projects with Hazy Harmony in the future.
